Q: What is an average day like for you on the job?
I’m primarily a hands-on guy; I spend most of my time running equipment on-site. I also do estimating, of course, which involves a lot of cost research as well as ordering supplies and materials, and writing proposals. My responsibilities are pretty wide-ranging. My favorite part of the job is being on-site, though. I really enjoy working with the guys and interacting with clients.
Q: Do you have a favorite project?
My favorite project was the pond we built for Mel Weaver up by his cabin in the mountains. For many years, he had wanted a pond where the family could go fishing and swimming. It was my first experience working side by side with Mel, and we stayed over in the cabin, so I got the chance to know everyone better. My family came along and we had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the opportunity to help bring Mel’s dream of a pond into a reality.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
I always have to be thinking outside the box. Nothing ever goes 100 percent according to plan; there are always unforeseeable obstacles and I have to adjust to keep the project on course and make it better.
I also appreciate the flexibility Weaver offers in our schedules. They’re very accommodating.
But my favorite aspect of the job is being able to help customers. They have a dream or ambition, maybe a pond or a dream home, and I get to be part of bringing that dream into reality. That’s exciting. I enjoy seeing the happiness it brings customers when the work is done.
Q: What do you like least?
Working in cold and bad weather!
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
I’m a volunteer fire chief, so I spend a lot of time at the Fivepointville Fire House. Firefighting is a tradition in my family. My wife, Deborah, is on the auxiliary, so for us it’s a family activity. Mostly I enjoy spending time with my family. We have four daughters, and we enjoy going to the beach and spending time in our cabin.
Q: Do you have any favorite movies or shows?
I’m not a huge movie buff, but I like “Fireproof” and the TV show “Chicago Fire.”
