Connie Gehman is the second-most senior employee at Weaver Construction, joining us nearly 25 years ago under our founder, Mel Weaver. Get a glimpse into her work as Accounts Payable and Human Resource Manager.
Can you describe a typical day on the job?
Over the years my work has grown quite a bit. I began working two days a week doing a variety of administrative support tasks. We had no computers then, so we did a lot more tasks by hand. Today I manage Accounts Payable, Payroll and Human Resources. Keeping on top of all that is a big job. It keeps me busy and I like that.
What do you like best about your job?
I like helping people, so Human Resources is probably my favorite part of the job. I like answering people’s questions when they don’t understand their benefits and helping them make good decisions. One of my spiritual gifts is service, and I see myself fitting into that role in the company. I sense that people trust me; they know I know a lot of information about those things and that I’ll keep our conversations confidential. They’re not afraid to come and talk to me, and that makes me feel good.
What are your least favorite tasks?
I enjoy all that I do here, but my least favorite aspects are probably the year-end reports for Payroll and Accounts Payable. They’re critical and a bit tedious, and I have to work them in around my other duties. It’s always a crunch in January, getting all the reports together to send to our accountant. But we get through it.
What is it like to work at Weaver?
I love a lot of things about working here, but the fact that management cares about our family lives is probably the thing I love the most. Weaver has been very flexible with my schedule to allow me to spend time with my children and five grandchildren. I can pretty much set my hours and float my days off. I babysit for one of my daughters one day a week, and Ken and Randy gave me the flexibility to do that. They allow me to work independently and get the job done.
I’ve been here for almost 25 years because it’s a good place to work. There are a lot of really top-notch people here. We support and help one another. When someone makes a mistake, there’s no condemning. We just work together to fix it.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
In my free time I enjoy taking motorcycle trips. My husband and I have a Harley-Davidson, and we like to ride with our friends and with a group from our church. I also enjoy bicycling and reading.
